Grand Canyon Panorama by johnwarren Grand Canyon Panorama by johnwarren
Phew - Finally this is finished.. Kind of anyway.

I've been doing this on and off for the last few months. I remember showing ~ psamtik a snow version of this that I was supposed to expand, but I got distracted and slowly worked on the textures that were in my original Arizona River. Shocking stuff... Anyway, I'm not too keen on the sky, but it shows off the textures better than any other atmosphere did - You might get to see a "blue hazed" version of this in my scraps so keep an eye out if you wish :p

The terrain is a 4097x4097 DEM of the Grand Canyon - Forgive the roughness of the dirty texture on the right too. I think it's something to do with the DEM and not the actual textures. 3 frames originally rendered at 2000x2000, stitched together in Photoshop.

This is my first "finished" panoramic render, so any comments or critique on any aspect of the render would be appreciated! :D

A print will be made of this soon too.. Depending on a few things anyway :D

Grand Canyon Panorama by =johnwarren is one of the most impressive wonders on this planet. Digitally recreated, with all the great, eyecatching things that make the grand canyon what it is... this piece of art truly shows the strength of terragen and its possibilities. Very Awesome!! I cam across this Piece a few months Ago, but I had no Idea you had done this :O Incredible :) By the way, where did you get the Grand Canyon DEM Terrain? I have been looking all over for it, and after seeing this...I need to have it o.O
PatGoltz Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2006
Oh, one other thing: your Colorado River is very pretty (and because of the altitude drops and the limitations in Terragen, you'll have to make it much wider than in real life). However, in real life, the Colorado is muddy brown. ;)
PatGoltz Featured By Owner Feb 6, 2006
The realism in this is totally awesome! You even got the vertical cliff structure that has been eluding me, and I think I see how you did it! :D

The color of the canyon is just a bit too yellow. It should be redder. The cliffs are actually light in color but may be tinged reddish, and the slopes are tinged red. Depending on the time of year, you may see some light green grass on the flatter surfaces. What I haven't been able to do yet is simulate the small bushes that dot the flatter surfaces. The haze tends to make the scene look slightly bluish, except when the sun is low in the sky, which tinges everything redder.

You can see examples of the actual appearance of the Grand Canyon on my web site: [link]

There are three galleries of Grand Canyon pictures.

I am selling reference photos in my store on Renderosity. My username there is the same as here.

This is excellent. I am especially amazed at how you got a river the length of the canyon. Given the DEM, that's not easy! Since you asked for advanced critique, I will offer some suggestions. I have visited the Grand Canyon several times. You can see a few of my pictures of it here: [link] [link] [link] The Grand Canyon is predominantly light colored rock to red, rather than a dark brown. Haze also lends a blue cast to it quite often. The river is actually much narrower. Strata on the vertical cliffs don't actually appear prominent; in fact, the main feature is the vertical nature of the breakup of the cliff surface. This is hard to do with Terragen, but it is possible that an overlay would do the job, but it would have to be carefully chosen. The flatter surfaces are dotted with grey-green plants (which is almost impossible in Terragen) and the ground underneath is sand-colored. In a wet season, it would be a light green. The clouds are reasonable, and do allow light rays which will help the drama of light and shadow on the surface. You would do better with 2D clouds, and make them only 2 or 3 high. You can make them large enough (and you can thicken them to make rays). It may have to be a compromise between the 2D clouds and the ability to cast rays but still have the picture light enough to be visible (though you can lighten the shadows to compensate).

Here is my best rendition of the Canyon to date: [link]

Good luck, and feel free to ask questions.

Congratulations on the DD! It's about time some of us Terragen artists got noticed!

well, I can say I've been lucky enough to have seen the canyons in real life, that doesn't come close to mimicing thier real beauty, not that a computer could, but that is still an amazing piece of work very deserving of what it got. The sky is amazing w/o everyting else! Two personal prefernces hit at once, beautiful landscapes and an amazing sky to boot. great work:D

It's not bad dude (that said, it tops a lot of the terragen that's round dA) - but you've done a lot better IMO. The main fault as a few have said is the sky, the clouds really aren't superb, although I can see how they're somewhat necessary to achieve the atmospheric effects. The surface map is well done, but I think the water ruins the feel of scale - it looks like brook from fairly close up, and diminishes the regal dominance the canyon would normally have.

Depth is nicely simulated, as is atmosphere, but I've lost the sense of scale with this one, and the cloudscape is the thing that I'm having true gripes with. Otherwise, it's good.

very good overall, looks very realistic, but the sky is a little too hot in the top left corner, burnt out and has no detail. maybe go back in and fix this if possible?

I thought this was a photograph. It's so shocking to see that it isn't. My goodness, the detail put into this is amazing. It's a shame that I'm so unfamiliar with the program(s) you used to render this, because I'd like to offer you a more useful critique.

As such, I'm only going to be able to talk about concept. I think that what I like the most about it is the discovery that there's more to this than a "simple" landscape. Canyons such as these tend to point to a deep history. The carving of the land through millenia and all that. It would be interesting if you could explore this theme a bit more even in your technical approach. What would happen if there was a dialogue between the subject matter of an ancient canyon and the method you used to create the piece. You could leave certain areas unfinished in your rendering. Allow it to look like it was made with a computer program. Pixels aren't always a bad thing either, in my opinion.

I completely understand this striving for perfection, but I'd like to see an image that isn't so perfect too ^___^.

Anyway, I'm faving this (with everyone else, eh?). I shall have to look at your gallery whenever I have another spare moment.
